The
polar bear (Ursus maritimus), also known as the white bear, or sea bear
is Canada's largest carnivorous mammal and unlike the cute polar bears
in the
coke christmas ad these giant's of Canada's frozen north would happily
eat
you for dinner if
they caught you on an ice flow. Polar bears rank with the Kodiak
bear as among the planets largest living carnivores. The largest polar
bear on record
weighed in at an estimated 580 kg almost 2000lbs and stood almost 12ft
upright.
Regarded as a marine mammal due to its intimate relationship with the
sea
it is found in and around the Arctic Ocean and Canada's Arctic archipelago.
Population estimates are just over 20,000 decreases in the polar sea ice
due to
global warming may even lead to the extinction of this species within
this century.
