The first lighthouse on Canada's west coast Fisgard Lighthouse
has been an important symbol of sovereignty-British, Colonial and Canadian-since
1860. Fisgard provides a guide for mariners to Royal Roads anchorage,
Esquimalt harbour and its naval base, and points the way to Victoria harbour. |

tower. Constructed in 1898 to prevent small,
fast
torpedo boats slipping
under the
guns of Upper and Lower Batteries. |

This short 15-minute trail follows an historic
sentry path and takes you through lush shorline woods to a machine gun post and searchlight emplacement overlooking the beach and the Esquimalt
Lagoon.

Esquimalt
Lagoon and estuary seen from the searchlight emplacement on the the shoreline nature trail.
The estuary acts as a transition zone between
freshwater, marine and
forest habitats. The grounds just north of the lagoon are home to Hatley
Castle and Gardens and Royal
Roads University campus. |
